Modern and contemporary design works and materials related to Osaka

Hayakawa Yoshio (1917-2009) was a graphic designer who was born in Noda, which is now part of Osaka’s Fukushima-ku. He worked as a designer for Osaka’s Mitsukoshi Department Store, and later joined the Osaka City Department of Culture. After World War II, he worked in the advertising department of the Kintetsu Department Store, and set up his own design business in Osaka. Later, he opened an office in Tokyo, moving his entire base of operations there. His professional successes in Tokyo far exceeded those he achieved in Osaka, yet Hayakawa is still spoken of as one of the designers who best represent Osaka’s strengths. Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka’s collection includes many representative works by the artist, including Hayakawa’s posters for the Caron Dressmaking School and the Shusaikai-Kimono Show at Kintetsu Department Store.
