The Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka will hold the exhibition Kazuyo Kinoshita: A Retrospective from May 25 to August 18, 2024.
Kinoshita’s career as an artist began in the 1960s, when she was involved with the Group “I” avant-garde art collective. In the 1970s, she created numerous works that used photography to examine the relationship between image, perception, and matter. This highly intellectual approach was in keeping with global trends in conceptual art at the time, and was highly regarded in Europe. In the 1980s, she shifted her focus to abstract painting. With each stroke of her brush, she sharply questioned her own sensory perception. These canvases are fraught with an air of tension, and can be said to represent the culmination of her oeuvre.
This will be the largest solo exhibition of Kinoshita’s works ever mounted. It takes an unprecedented close look at the totality of her practice, presenting everything from early works to masterpieces and final pieces.
