Summary

Born in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, Takashima Yajuro (1890 – 1975) was a Western-style painter who painted with distinctive, realistic brushwork, producing works such as Candle and Moon. This show is the largest retrospective exhibition of Takashima’s art ever, and the first to be held in Osaka, presenting over 160 works, including paintings never shown before. TAKASHIMA Yajuro, Self-Portrait in a Buddhist Priest’s Stole
1920, Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art

TAKASHIMA Yajuro Takashima Yajuro (1890‒1975) was born in Fukuoka and was active as a yoga (Western-style painting) artist with studios in Fukuoka, Tokyo, and Chiba. He was hardly known during his lifetime, and appreciation of this artist began after his death. The first retrospective of his works was held at Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art in 1986 (Showa 61). Thereafter, exhibitions have been organized in various locations in Japan, and in recent years, he has become known on a nationwide basis. Yajuro studied at the Eighth Higher School (present-day Nagoya University) under the prewar education system and majored in fisheries science at the College of Agriculture at Tokyo Imperial University (present-day University of Tokyo). Despite graduating at the top of his class, contrary to the expectations of the people around him, he chose to become a painter. He studied painting on his own. He did not belong to any particular art group and avoided catering to the fashions and trends of the time. The stoic lifestyle through which Yajuro devotedly endeavored to remain faithful to his ideals and beliefs may appear extremely captivating to us as we live in a period of turmoil, where there is no sign of an exit.
