Celebrating the Museum’s First Anniversary

Art in Love with Design ♡ Design Envious of Art

2023-04-15 – 2023-06-18

Summary

We hear the words “design” and “art” used all around us—at school and work, while shopping or eating, on TV and the internet, and when conducting business. But what are design and art? And, where does the boundary lie between design and art? Examining about one hundred works of various types from postwar Japan, this exhibition follows the course of time on a small journey in search of the boundary and the overlap between design and art. Embracing their passion for everchanging society and lifestyles and ways of thinking and expression, people who devoted themselves to creation in the design and art worlds have produced new works influenced by the other side, driven sometimes by love, and sometimes by envy. This exhibition is planned so that visitors can enjoy asking from their own perspective whether each work is design or art.

Art and design are the key themes behind the activities of the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, which recently celebrated its first anniversary. This is our first exhibition to present art and design side by side. And, rather than being an invitation for visitors to enjoy a story prepared by the museum, this show comes into being through the point of view of its visitors. We have prepared an experience involving ‘participation’ that goes beyond the appreciation of art and design.

Highlights

1. Presenting the work of seventy creators from the postwar era onward to focus on the relationship between design and art Over half a century has passed since postwar Japan became familiar with the English word “design,” a term that was not generally well-known during prewar times. Today, the field of design has grown tremendously. When the Japanese art world adopted the English word “art,” the field expanded to encompass a range of expression that transcended that of the conventional Japanese art world. This exhibition focuses on the relationship between design and art from the postwar period onwards, tracing the work of designers and artists from the 1950s to the 2010s.

2. A much-awaited exhibition directly addressing the hot topic of the boundary between design and art This exhibition presents hit mobile phone and furniture designs as well as various genres of art. Viewing design and art in the same space might produce a different impression than when viewing them separately. We hope this exhibition will allow viewers to experience having their hearts (♡) moved by these works, and serve as an opportunity to approach a solution to the question of what is design and what is art.
