VISION
Vision for Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka
Osaka City’s long-awaited museum of modern art and design—the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka—is finally opening in Feb. 2022 on Nakanoshima, the island at Osaka’s core that symbolizes Aqua Metropolis Osaka. Three decades have passed since the museum’s planning office was set up in 1990, during which time the vision for the museum has changed in keeping with the times. As the new museum comes to life in the twenty-first century, we contemplate its current and future role in Osaka, in Japan, and in the world.
This is the museum’s vision.
1The museum connects history, creates the future
Connecting the basis of the art museum with the present, and aiming to do what no one has done before.
As a specialist in art and design from the latter half of the nineteenth century to the present day, providing the essential functions of an art museum—collection, storage, surveys, research, exhibitions, publication, and communication—discover and support new creative work in keeping with the enterprising spirit of Osaka and its innovative, outside-the-box approach.
2The museum promotes circulation of information and knowledge, discovery and amazement.
Going beyond simply opening up the doors of the museum, reaching out and opening up new opportunities
As an appealing place centered around a passage open and welcoming to all, and as an art museum that creates opportunities for the exchange of knowledge and experience, nurture information and human resources to send out into society, and promote the circulation and use of those resources.
3The museum regards connections as a driving force.
Seeing our limitations as opportunities to find partners
As a collaborative art museum that develops functions and projects through cooperation with a variety of third parties, as an art museum for mutual learning in which the museum and city residents learn together and from each other, and as a member of Nakanoshima, Osaka and other communities, keep changing together with society.
4The museum contributes to Osaka.
Enjoying and benefiting from Osaka’s past and present, communicating the future to the world, and creating a place where people, ideas, and things move forward together, here in Nakanoshima
As an art museum at the center of Nakanoshima’s art and culture zone, and as a new symbol for Osaka, put down roots in the cultural soil cultivated by Osaka’s rich history, and nurture local culture. Firmly grounded, communicate creativity that has the power to move people–from Osaka to the rest of Japan and the entire world.
