Summary

Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) moved to France where he, together with artists such as Pablo Picasso and Tsuguharu Foujita, was associated with L'École de Paris. Modigliani applied the thorough skills in painting that he acquired in his native country to establish his unique style in Paris, the City of Art, and was a prolific portrait painter throughout his life. The subjects of Modigliani’s portraits are characterized by almond-shaped eyes and long, thin necks while he skillfully captures the inner essence of his subjects. His body of work consists of dynamic paintings which he continued to produce until his death at the young age of 35, and which continue to be loved by people throughout the world today. Focusing predominantly on Modigliani’s works held in Japanese and international collections, this exhibition presents the new trends and diverse artistic environment which developed in Paris during Modigliani’s time, tracing the steps that culminated in his art.
Both Modigliani’s art and the art that flowered in Paris during the early twentieth century are filled with the dynamic energy that ushered in a new era. Savor the rich essence of these works at Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka as it embarks on a new journey.
