AKASHIKA Maya
2022-08-06 – 2022-09-11
Summary
Akashika's practice includes showing her work through installations with photos of various sizes floating in a space, making the methods used in her creative process overt by exhibiting items such as memos and test prints. Her work mixes photos in which she directs friends working as her models with snapshots taken in the city. When she shows situations crafted as a scene and natural situations in which the subject doesn’t know he or she is being photographed in an ambiguous way, the artist discovers a sense of reality possessed by things that don’t actually exist, comparable to a dream or ghost. Examining Akashika’s photos and trying to discern what they capture, viewers sense hints of ‘something’ there that can’t actually be seen.
In addition to past works, the exhibition presents new works shown for the first time.

About Osaka Directory
Organized jointly by the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka and the Kansai Osaka 21st Century Association, the Osaka Directory series of exhibitions introduces upcoming Kansai-connected artists in a solo exhibition format. Starting from the current year, the annual series will present artists who create new art symbolizing the coming age of the future. The term "directory" is used in IT(Information Technology) to refer to folders and similar structures that are used to organize files. Through this series, the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka stores ‘files’ on promising young artists in the Kansai area in a ‘directory’ from which it can present their work to a wide audience throughout the world and support the launch of their careers on the global scene.
