KOURYOU
2025-01-25 – 2025-02-24
Summary
KOURYOU creates art in many different forms, such as websites, paintings, and sculptures. Launching the Ebune houseboat, an art project with a "people of the sea" motif that has been on the move since 2019, she has exhibited art together with many other artists throughout Japan based on traditional tales and legends. The inspiration for the works presented in this show comes from the fact that Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka is located where warehouses once stood during early modern times. Combining Nakanoshima's history of having many things, people, and information arrive by ship with her own Ebune activities, KOURYOU presents an installation that is related to things that can be seen at this location, which is a center for a wide range of culture.

KOURYOUBorn in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1983. Lives and works in Tokyo and Osaka Prefecture. In 2008, KOURYOU launched Click Spirit, an online labyrinth of hyperlinks. Shifting between site creation and her artistic practice, she also produces paintings that resemble design drawings and three-dimensional works. Her representative works include the Iwaki Legend Notes—Accounts of the Fox Incident website, which superimposes real-world maps and maps of traditional tales and legends, and has been online since 2016. After building her first Ebune for Setouchi Triennale 2019 (Megijima), in 2020 she launched the Ebune houseboat project that has since “drifted” to Saga, Fukuoka, Shodoshima, Awajishima, and Osaka. In conjunction with many other artists, KOURYOU collaborates with local communities to organize exhibitions, rituals, and events based on research about the land. She puts together a narrative on the website, too. Her major exhibitions include VOCA 2019 (Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo, 2019), From the museum collection 2020: fourth period (Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Aichi Prefecture, 2021), KNOT (Amano Gallery, Osaka, 2023), and Prototype (Watarium Museum on Sundays & Light Seed Gallery, Tokyo, 2023). She also participated in Minamihida Art Discovery (Gero City, Gifu Prefecture, 2024) as EBUNE × AGURI.

About Osaka Directory Supported by RICHARD MILLE
Organized jointly by Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka and The Kansai Osaka 21st Century Association, the Osaka Directory series of exhibitions introduces upcoming Kansai-connected artists in a solo exhibition format. This annual series presents artists who create new art symbolizing the coming age of the future. The term "directory" is used in IT (Information Technology) to refer to folders and similar structures that are used to organize files. Through this series, Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka stores ‘files’ on promising young artists in the Kansai area in a ‘directory’ from which it can present their work to a wide audience throughout the world and support the launch of their careers on the global scene.
